FOXES IN FICTION - THE WORLD IS AS SOFT AS LACE (FELT COVER)

I stayed up late into the morning working on this cover to try and beat some pre-tour anxieties. Nowhere near as good as the original and I feel kind of guilty for even trying because I had to drastically simiplify the song-long solo because I’m actually a really terrible guitar player, but this has been one of my absolute favourite songs / bands ever since I discovered them on the Pillows and Prayers compilation when I was 15 or 16, so I still had fun with it it. Fun facts: I’m pretty sure this is the first recording I’ve ever made with a real bass guitar. Samples Atlas Sound and Coma Cinema for drums.

How did I not find this earlier? Big thanks to my pal Rachel Levy for unknowingly turning me on to this because it just made my day.

Ok so there is this band from Sheffield, England and they are called Best Friends.Oh and their debut EP is called Surf Bitches and the cover features a tie-dye-wearin’ golden retriever. If someone told me that the band was in this for anything other than the fun of it I would flat out call them a liar. I mean come on, it’s a golden retriever!

Now the music itself is (again) some spunky, noisy surf rock. Sorry for the barrage of it lately but like I said I’m on vacation. So in order for you to get a little taste of what I’m feelinn’ right now then do yourself a favor and download this free EP. If it doesn’t slap a big stupid grin across your mug then you are most likely dead.

HELLO, EVERYBODY!

When I started this blog last April never once did I think it would become what it is today. I was leaving school for the summer and I knew I’d be bored with extra time so into the blogging world I dove. It was initially intended to be something for my friends to read so that they could see what music I was listening to. I posted links to free music downloads and frequently made mixes for them to download and then before I knew it Cactus-Mouth became a full-blown music blog with a loyal reader base. Whaaat?!

I am so immensely grateful for the opportunities that this blog has afforded me. I’ve met so many cool people and made some really great friends and I’ve enjoyed every moment of it. So in honor of a year well spent I decided to ask some of my favorite musical homies if they wanted to contribute to a celebratory mixtape. This monster is the result of that. I respect and thank each and every cool cat that went into making this mixtape happen. And I’d also like to thank you, my lovely readers, for caring enough to read this blog and spur it on into its second year.

On this mixtape you will find some all new, mostly exclusive songs from just a few of my favorite people. You will also find the debut of 16 and Pregnant, a new side project by Sam Ray and Rachel Levy. So download this thing and spread it around. It should be a good time.

I’ve spent the last few weeks in my new house working on this album under the name “elvis depressedly”. It’s finished now and while I’m happy with it, I don’t expect many people to really find it enjoyable to listen to, but that’s okay, I offer it to you freely anyway if you’d like to hear it. Just click the photo above.

The album is called “selfless violence” and consists of five songs recorded live onto a tape recorder, and they are attempting to be a representation of certain feelings and thoughts that have been warping and melting in my head lately. Now is a time spent in confusion and desire and weirdness and prettiness and longing, and I know lots of you are there too.

As far as Coma Cinema goes, I don’t know if I can afford to record the songs I’ve written for what I wanted to be the last album under that name. I’m trying as hard as I can but it may just be forever in limbo unless something incredibly lucky happens.

i lost my favorite hat in the snow somewhere this winter and i wrote this song the next night to commemorate it.

luckily i’ve since replaced it.

it’s not an amazing song but i tried to capture the feel of being lost in a snowstorm at night and the drones do that pretty well i think even though the actual song is pretty aimless.

Click the photo here to download the new Coma Cinema EP, entitled Abandoned Lands. Which I realize was supposed to be released on my birthday which is this Sunday, but it’s finished so why should I make anyone wait. Also I’m sure to be dead in a ditch somewhere by the end of this weekends psychedelic freak out.

These songs were all written and recorded quickly, mistakes weren’t edited and the lyrics all arrived through the stream of consciousness, so it’s a lot different than anything else I’ve done. The record would not of been possible without the help of my friends Warren Hildebrand (of Foxes in Fiction) and Lance Smith (of Pandit). You should definitely check out their beautiful songs.

Thank you for listening and sharing and making my records possibilities. Let’s hope this year is as productive as the last, without being nearly as sad.

Tragedy strikes without warning, and I guess that’s why it’s tragic. Because we never see it coming. Well on their venture out to LA the great dudes Andy and Charlie from Two Michael Jordans Records got robbed something fierce. About $7000 worth of equipment, clothes, etc. were taken without their permission never to be seen again.

However, their spirits have not been totally broken. They’ve blown the horn, and summoned all their FRNDS and FMLY to come to their aid. This is being done in one of the most massive, well put together compilations I’ve just about ever seen. You can stream the whole thing below. The tracklisting is amazing. 25 out of 31 exclusive tracks.

Check out their kickstarter where they are offering a ton of awesome goodies just to get back on their feet and continue making and supporting some great music!
